Deep Fried Ribs at Kilkenny’s Irish Pub

Next time you’re at Kilkenny’s Irish Pub off Cherry Street in Tulsa, don’t miss the deep-fried ribs.  Being a rib man I was concerned they would lack the flavor I look for in a good rib, but think about it…. its pork baby! These ribs are battered, deep-fried and seasoned with basic seasonings. Served with a side of warm BBQ sauce they make the perfect pub dream come true.

That night we also ordered the meatloaf sandwich, stay away from this one. It was late and I can’t remember why it sucked, but we sent it back for more ribs :) . All I remember thinking is… they need to remake this sandwich. That was the first bad dish I’ve ever had at Kilkenny’s.

Kilkenny’s is one of my favorite restaurant in Tulsa. If you are looking for the full experience I recommend hitting them for a lunch, dinner and their underrated brunch.

Get the chips. The chips (French fries) are English style and very very good.

Hey Brian, glad you enjoyed the ribs. One of my favorites. Sorry about the meatloaf sandwich, usually don’t have complaints about it. Thanks again for the review.
January is soup month, check out the Butternut Squash its delicious.

A very rare burger at Smoke

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had some of the best burgers I’ve ever eaten at Smoke. They’ve been offering burgers as a $5 special on Monday nights, but that deal ends with the month of May. I think they have burgers on the lunch menu. I’m not sure whether they’re normally available at dinner. They might be available only in the bar area. Get them whenever and wherever you can.

Nothing but the finest for these burgers. USDA Prime. Ten years ago you couldn’t find USDA Prime anywhere in Tulsa. Beef raised in a little ranch in western Oklahoma. I think they use the best cuts too, New York strip, just like their steaks. Buns fresh from Farrell Family Bread, and if you haven’t heard of them you should. They’re one of the finest artisan bakers around. Lettuce and tomato from the Farmer’s Market. Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and pickles made in the restaurant.

The Monday burgers are normally about 6 ounces but last night I got them to make me a larger one. I ordered it very rare. You can see it in the photo above.  I don’t know how they got the cheese to melt so well. On a very rare burger, even Ron Baber had problems with that. I think this deserves another shot. Look how thick and juicy this baby is.

Usually burgers made with high grade meat aren’t worth the hype. They don’t have enough fat and they are just too dry. That’s not true of this one. (And before a lot of my friends complain, I’ve heard this is true of the Brady Burger too. I’ve never ordered a Brady Burger, for each time I go there I’ve been seduced by Grant Vespasian’s other offerings.) Though I’ve heard from friends that Smoke has overcooked their burgers, they did a perfect job on mine each time I was there. I ordered very rare and that’s exactly what I got.

Just the way I like it. The outside fully cooked, even charred, the inside more or less raw but cooked enough so the fat starts to melt, yielding that rich and primal flavor. This could be the poster boy for rareburger.com. But if this is too primal for you, gentle reader, be aware that Smoke makes great desserts (and the dessert menu is huge photos on an iPad 2), so let me leave you with something sweet.

We had the burgers last night too – they were really yummy but we didn’t get to try the mayo or pickles – none on our burgers and they weren’t given as options. :-( Ours just had lettuce, tomato, and a little mustard. We ordered ours medium well and they definitely weren’t overcooked. They were cooked through while still incredibly juicy. Just a note – since the pics show fries – fries aren’t included. We weren’t told that until after our burgers came so we were about halfway through them (eating slowly) before we had fries. For $2 it was a sizeable order though and enough to share. Very crispy. Just make sure you order them when you order the burgers. The ketchup is definitely homemade and maybe not what you’d expect – it wasn’t as sweet as normal ketchup and my son’s immediate reaction was “It’s like tomato sauce!” but he ate almost all of it so it got his approval.

Slap me mama, ANOTHER place just opened on Cherry Street!

OH the hits just keep on coming. One of my Facebook friends just tipped me off to a new place run by Chef Candace Conley just across the street from Smoke. It features cooking classes, catering, prepared items such as Brie en croute and baby back ribs, and, once a month, an elaborate chef’s table dinner. (Reserve in advance for that.)

New Cherry Street upscale joint could be a winner!

Walking down Cherry Street I saw that the old Bourbon St. Cafe was having a total makeover. I walked in and spoke with the owner. It’s going to be a new upscale restaurant and bar called Smoke. They’re bringing in a chef from Austin, TX. He’ll feature local produce when possible and offer a menu that will change weekly, sometimes daily if they get a great deal at the farmers’ market. Lunch entrees will top out under $15, while dinner entrees will range from $15 to $25, except for steaks, which are more. They hope to open Tuesday! (December 28) I’ll be there. This could be the start of something wonderful.

Just had lunch at Smoke in Tulsa. Food was very so so. Ther
service actually sucked! What a shame staff did not know menu.
Didn’t even bother to say thank you when we left as the hostess was
too busy talking to another emplyee about shopping.

I had dinner there Thursday PM-While the food was only good
(& overpriced), the waitress was beyond awful. I had to ask
5 times for a tea refill-She was more interested in what was going
on in the kitchen than her customers-I will never return

Jae, First of all i am truely sorry for your bad experience at Smoke. Although I have to argue the point that we are over priced, I am bringing in the highest of quality food that I can find into the restaurant and that is not cheap. I would like the oppertunity to bring you back in the restaurant on me, and talk to you about what we are trying to do here. At the time you were in we had only been open 3 days. No excuses though please contact me via email and i will make you a happy regular here at Smoke.

I was there today for lunch with 3 friends. Everyone’s Food poorly prepared, I ordered Kobe beef burger medium well. It came to the table oozing blood. Everything including the greens on my plate were so soaked in grease, the bun buttered then grilled, the fries a greasy limp mess. The chef/ cooks need grilling/cooking lessons badly. I did like the spicy ketchup. I think the cigar room is the signature statement there, so If that is what you like perhaps you will enjoy the place.

I had the most outstanding Sunday lunch at Smoke. on Cherry
Street yesterday! Everything was perfect, including an incredible
bread pudding dessert; my waiter, Joe, could not have been more
attentive, courteous, or helpful; the price was certainly
reasonable considering the quality of the food and the ambiance of
the place; and while I’m not a consumer of alcoholic beverages, the
General Manager explained how they were even making sure that they
offered U.S. produced wine because it is just as good as imports
and costs the consumer much less. In these tough, economic times in
our country, what else can you say but, “Bravo!” I plan to make
      “many happy returns!”
