That was my reaction yesterday afternoon as I was finishing a bite of sweet yams at new Glenpool home cookery Soulfully Southern. Founders Kim, Angela and Desiree are childhood friends all from Oklahoma who started the restaurant just 7 weeks ago. So far, it remains an undiscovered gem of Southern home cooking glory.

The restaurant is in a small space with a diner feel. Sit down and get served by one of the three charming owners. When we asked what’s good, one of the dinners next to us spoke up saying, “its all good… the chicken, meatloaf, pork chop, breakfast… it’s all good… we’ve been coming every day since they opened.” I was split between the pork chop and fried chicken. The way Desiree described the chop had my mouth watering, but I had to get some of that fried to order chicken.

The wait didn’t feel long at all considering fried chicken can take a while to get all good, crispy and juicy. While waiting, we talked with Desiree who explained to us that Soulfully Southern, “… is comfort food, that means you should be good and comfy in your tummy when you leave.” Well.. just look at the outcome… this is true comfort food. Fried chicken, mac’n cheese, yams and mashed potatoes.

The chicken was hand battered with thick and peppery corn meal batter. Wait a few minutes before biting in, these legs and breasts just came out of the fryer and could go down like molten lava if you’re not careful. I also believe that by waiting you are letting the juices blend before devouring. I’m talking juicy flavorful chicken accompanied by all the right sides. A good tip I found: put a little chicken onto the garlic bread and finish it off with a little Louisiana hot sauce…oh, man…dat good.
If you could use a little extra comfort this winter you need to hit up Soulfully Southern. It will definitely put you in the right mood. All you need to do is jump on highway 75 and head south to Glenpool. It’s right off Casper Street, right next to Daylight Donuts. I’ll be back for breakfast and some more of that fried chicken… and oh yeah… that extra thick mouth-watering pork chop I was told about.

CLOSES 2 P.M.?? What a shame, I’d be there in a shot for dinner if they stayed open later. Great find!

Glad to hear about the Friday supper thing, that means I can check it out. Otherwise the hours thing kills this place for me.

-Sweet potatoes.
They’re sweet potatoes. Not yams. That bugs me.
Not sure why. Kinda like calling tomatoes ‘apples’.
Happy eating.

I stopped in to sample this little slice of heaven for lunch not long ago. I ordered the Catfish basket which came with 4-5 pieces of really good catfish, a semi truck load of fries, and toast. I will definately return. Great job ladies!!
