Rasta Lavista Old Friend – RIP Phat Philly’s

By on September 9, 2010

Yesterday I confirmed with my own eyes, ears and mouth a rumor I had heard a few weeks ago.  Tulsa’s favorite lovechild of Reggae music and the greatest Philly Cheesesteaks in town will be closing it’s doors for good after it’s 5th anniversary party next Tuesday, September 14th 2010.  I’m not sure whether I’m writing an obituary here, or a food entry.

This final trip the 1137 gang took to the mecca of Tulsa Manly Food lunchspots did not disappoint… well, except for the fact that I realized this will likely be the last 11 inches of greasy, meaty goodness I will taste from this place.

I savored every last bite like a man on death row eating his final meal… greasy, cheesy, mushroomy heaven!  If you haven’t been, get there quick.  If you have been, you know exactly what I’m talking about.  But oddly enough, the hi-lite of this trip wasn’t the food, but it was the vagrant who walked in off the street, walked through the restaurant to the trash can, pulled a cup out of the trash can and proceeded to help himself to the soda fountain.  The best part of it was… no one in the restaurant, customers or workers, seemed like this was anything out of the ordinary.  Everyone just kind of looked around at each other and chuckled, all of us probably thinking the same thing… “Well, I guess I won’t be getting any Mountain Dew refills today!”  At the end of the lunch, the mood was pretty much the same it has been every other time we’ve eaten here over the past 3 years.  One of satisfaction, fulfillment, and “OMG, I feel sorry for anybody who has to share a bathroom with me today!”

Phat Philly’s will be having a special “5 Year Anniversary” party next Tuesday with food, beer and live music.  Brandon Clark kicks things off at 6:30 PM, followed by Ego Culture at 9:00 PM.  They will also be selling a limited quantity of 5 year anniversary t-shirts for $20, and are taking reservations now.  So if you want a piece of Tulsa foodie history, get on down to Phat Philly’s and reserve yours before they run out!  I have it on good authority they’re selling quick.  Part of me is expecting Ashton Kutcher to jump out of a van Tuesday night and tell all of us we’ve been “Punk’d”.  Oh, wait… that’s so 2003.  I will provide more info as I get it.

Phat Philly's on Urbanspoon

In closing, I’d like to share a few words straight from my artery-clogged heart…

“Roll Another Phatty”

I came to town lookin’ for something to eat.

A true Philly cheesesteak, you cannot beat.

I didn’t want salad, nor chicken or pasta.

I needed a fix and was ready to Rasta.

I came across this quaint yellow building.

My favorite Night Court character was Dan Fielding.

Don’t give me that sandwich on a golden platter,

Just wrap it in paper, and make it a Phatter.

An ice cold beer to wash it all down.

I knew this was the best place in town!

Add mushrooms and onions for a mouthful of bliss.

Phat Philly’s is one place I truly will miss.
