Head Country Bar-B-Q-Restaurant Ponca City, OK

How far would you drive to eat at your favorite barbeque sauce’s restaurant? I mean the originators of backyard barbequing, and that awesome barbeque sauce that has made many of your meals better every week. Well one day me and a friend decided to drive Ponca City, OK, about 100 miles from Tulsa to visit the Head Country Bar-B-Q-Restaurant; check it out for you self below.

Head Country Bar-B-Q-Restaurant

Walking in we had no idea what to do, I could see that this place was probably the same it was the day it opened, overall it was a truly interesting experience. We walked into the line to be served, which consisted of one meat of our choice and two sides; that day it happened to be all you can eat ribs for only $10!  I got the ribs and my guest had the chicken. We sat down and then wondered, “what do we do now”? We were wondering what to do because we had never been to a place like this before, in other words, this place is truly an out in the middle of nowhere backyard BBQ joint and although it is next door to Wal-Mart (not so middle of nowhere)  the Head Country Bar-B-Q-Restaurant has still maintained its authenticity. Being from California this was different. In short the ribs where good not great and the chicken was really bad and not recommended. As far as the value of the overall experience it was worth the drive.

Best

Please come back and visit Ponca City for another BBQ experience! We have other choices; my favorite is Dougan’s BBQ on South 14th Street. That’s U.S. Highway 77 as you go north from 412. It’s on the east side of the street in an area of motels.

For a different style of BBQ you might also want to make a trip to try out Blue Moon (also known as Chick and Millie’s). It is also on U.S. Highway 77 at South Avenue. Just make a right turn on South Avenue and there you are.

We’ve got a lot to offer in the way of things to see on a day trip. While you’re here, visit the Marland Mansion, the Pioneer Woman and our historic downtown area. Check out The Poncan Theatre schedule for entertainment.

Here’s to good ribs! (Dougan’s has the best I’ve ever had. I even moved back to town to be close to them.)

Dougan’s BBQ is by far the best in Ponca maybe even the state. Great food! Awesome employees! what more can you ask for……maybe some more ribs and brisket. yum.

My family has eaten at both Dougan’s BBQ and Head Country and also numerous other BBQ locations around the US and Dougan’s is by far the best. Paul Dougan is an incredible cook, the ribs fall off the bone, brisket is so tender and juicy and the pulled pork sandwich has fantastic flavor. I wish he would start a mail order.
