Cosmos: Healthy Food and Fun Vibe

April 2nd, 2009 by Heather Quinnelly – Comments (3)

In such a busy part of town, Cosmos is still undiscovered by many who frequent the saturated chaos that is 71st and Memorial. Cosmos doesn’t do a lot of advertising; however they provide catering and do a lot of charity work which is very important to co-owner, Miranda Kaiser. Most of Cosmos popularity is likely word of mouth by devoted regulars who tell others about this fun oasis in a cluster of chain restaurants. Whether you are a meat lover, vegetarian, vegan or kosher only they have got you covered!

Step inside and take in the atmosphere with alternating black and red walls, large graffiti paintings and fun decorations for whatever holiday celebration is coming next. Seating options range from regular wood tables to couches and fluffy chairs to curl up in and relax. The vibe of the restaurant is laid back and easy going, depending on who is working that day there is a wide array of musical genres playing in the background and the bar has a big screen that shows movies such as Monty Python and Bettlejuice.

This funky and alternate spot offers many different food options and Miranda is proud of the fact that there is something for everyone and nothing on the menu is fried. My personal favorite is the “invent your own” (IYO) which provides patrons with the opportunity of selecting exactly how they want their sandwich or salad made. IYO forms are at each table, simply fill one out with all of your favorites and enjoy a customized meal. After finding your signature combination you will be hooked! Not feeling creative? The menu includes several sandwich and salads to choose from along with pizza and other specialty items. The appetizers are yummy and include creamy bruschetta, hummus, roast beef bites, etc. There are also suggestion cards at each table and if you fill one out and sign up for the newsletter Cosmos will email a link to the monthly newsletter which includes the events and specials for the upcoming month.

Of course the name would be deceiving if there wasn’t also a wide selection of cosmopolitans to sip on. There are 18 different cosmos to choose from, my favorite is “The Lush” which includes orange vodka, triple sec, strawberry schnapps, white cranberry, pineapple juice and a splash of sprite. Other favorites include the “Peach Cosmo” with vodka, peach liqueur and white cranberry juice and “The Chill” with vodka, melon and apple schnapps, white cranberry and a splash of sprite. With so many to choose from I suggest trying them all until you find your personal favorite (maybe not all in one night though). In addition to the cosmos a full service bar is available with hundreds of liquors and several quality beers on tap. Each week a mixed drink and a beer are featured as the drink of the week and are offered at a discounted price during happy hour. If alcohol isn’t your cup of tea then pick your favorite; there are about 60 tea options so narrowing it down to one can be tough. Coffee lover? They got you covered.

A shelf in the corner holds lots of games for both children and adults to play while having a drink or waiting on a meal. There is also free wi-fi and a spot in the northeast corner with a high bar for people to plug in and surf the web. On the other side there is a kids section with toys to keep the little one’s busy while mom and dad enjoy a night out. This homey spot appeals to a wide variety of patrons which is fitting for the eclectic atmosphere at Cosmos. The food is healthy, the drinks are good and the vibe is fun!

I like their food here, but the service sometimes leaves a little to be desired. The last time we went the waitress forgot to bring my food – even after she brought items to my friend and my son. She never came back to check on us, and was kind of difficult to find (plus I don’t usually throw fits) so she didn’t even notice until bringing our check – they put it in a to-go box (everyone else was done eating by then – we’d just gotten quick food), but there was no offer of any kind of compensation or even much of an apology. Go for the food, but keep on top of your waiter!
