I'll give doubleshot kudos for in-house roasting, but the Black Cat espresso that Cafe Cubana gets from Intelligentsia in Chicago is still superior. The machine at Cubana is a monstrous La Marzocco and their staff are rigorously trained by the owner, James, resulting in absolutely luxurious levels of crema in each cup. They'll dump any shot they don't like, something I never see anywhere else. The staff are also MUCH friendlier than the guys at doubleshot. They'll make your drink however you want, and their menu is extensive. Doubleshot always refused to make an italian macchiato (what's more authentic than that?) and now I hear they've eliminated breves. WTF?

For a pure espresso experience, get either a double shot of the black cat, or a macchiato. Get ready for lots of flavor. For what I call "crack-in-a-cup" get a tall or a grande cafe con leche. Espresso, steamed milk and sweetened condensed milk. Be ready for an energy rush. I don't recommend the world cup size drink unless you're withdrawing from meth.

One warning. Cubana uses an extra shot in each cup compared to most places. The tall (small) gets two, grande (medium) gets three and world cup (large) gets a brain-numbing four shots. Go there regularly and you'll love the combination of more coffee and less milk.
