Valkyrie, A Swank New Joint Downtown Tulsa

By on June 7, 2012

Yesterday was a great day. Marshall Brewing Co. released their “Arrowhead” pale ale at Dilly Deli. And Choc Beer Co. released their 2012 collaboration series of “Wild Brew”, a rye saison style ale, at Fassler Hall. To top off the night, still parched and wanting more, we walked to Valkyrie. A swank new joint located right next to Brady Tavern

Low lights, hip music, open floor plan, and a neat industrial look. The pub is warming with a Californiaesque chalkboard style menu above the bar. The bartenders and owners were knowledgeable on drink selections and descriptions of all the liquors. And there was great variety as well.

Valkyrie just opened last weekend. “Chooser of the Slain” in Norse mythology. No worries, the only thing slain here will be your palate. Their plan….to offer a rotating menu of great cocktails and craft beer. Serious drinks. New cocktail ideas will be constantly offered and changed. Beer is setup by style, and will constantly be rotating on tap. No bottled beer in this place. I asked about food, but the looks of a kitchen being built are slim to none. However, I was informed that if you want to bring food, then that is fine by them. The beverages were all outstanding. I’m a beer guy, but to be different, I started off with a few cocktails.

The Bumbo. Rum, lime, cinnamon, and nutmeg. “A legit Pirate Drink”, they say. It made me say “Arrrgh”. Tasty.

The Caipirinha. The national drink of Brazil made with Cachaça and lime. Bright and refreshing!

By the end of the night, we also had the Bourbon Dynasty and the Improved Whiskey Cocktail. Both were great. We did have a couple brews as well. Left Hand Brewing’s “TNT” is a must have. A weizenbock brewed with a “smoky” tea. A darker brew with a light body and tastes like liquid smoked brisket. Outstanding!

Head downtown to the Brady District and visit Valkyrie. Awesome new joint with plenty of tasty beverages to offer for everyone. And maybe after several cocktails later, you can make that trek to “Center of the Universe” and make your proclamations.

I’m a home cook with a little professional dabbling experience. A lover of craft beer! And if you don’t know about craft beer, then you will. Effervescent, vivacious, flavorful, and extremely wonderful. Happiness in a bottle….or can. Craft beer is an amazingly diverse and complex drink. Around one hundred different styles of beer in the world and thousands of breweries. A booming industry right now in America! And still, craft beer is deserving of MUCH greater culinary respect than it has been receiving.

I believe there is a beer for everyone and a beer for every delectable dish out there. I believe it stands up to wine just as well and even better in the culinary world. Cooking, pairing, drinking, and education. I hope to bring some useful knowledge into the foodie world concerning great beer with great food. Not everything is about beer, but it sure does make it better. Cheers!
