A Unique Way to Celebrate

December 8th, 2009 by Whitney Shae – Comments (0)

Have you ever realized how lucky we are here in Tulsa? When it comes to seafood, we have some of the best in the country.  Bodean’s Seafood Market is flown in fresh twice per day and they get only the best from all around the world. Last week we were invited to a B.Y.O.L party at a friend’s house. Let me tell you it was a memorable evening filled with friends, great food and some good wine.

It was Chef Amanda Simcoe’s birthday, and she decided that she wanted to throw a unique party. Since she is the Cooking School director at the Stock Pot, she has plenty experience shopping for the best food, cooking for dozens of people and entertaining very well with her bright personality. Everyone was asked to bring their own lobster (B.Y.O.L “bring your own lobster”).  Brian and I stopped by Bodean’s and purchased a 2 lb. Maine Lobster ($45). Pretty expensive, but I guess thats why it’s a treat and not eaten everyday at our house. As we arrived a plate full of oysters, also from Bodean’s, were awaiting us along with a nice bottle of Chardonnay.

The aroma of Meyer lemons filled the air along with herbs and spices. One burner of the stove-top sat a warm pot of butter infused with Meyer lemons and vanilla, longing for the little creatures to be dipped into it. Atop the other 3 burners was boiling water flavored with Meyer lemon peels, Buddha’s hand and flat leaf parsley. Our lobsters were all ready to play, or at least Amanda and Mark thought so! They gathered all the lobsters together after the water was at proper temperature and a few at a time the lobsters slid into the pot. Poor, poor little lobsters. I actually shed a tear when I had to let mine go. We had became good friends those last few hours.

The flavor-infused water had given the lobster a beautiful citrus flavor. Dipped in the melted butter, the lobster meat was tender, flavorful and had a natural sweetness to it. Corn on the cob and red potatoes were also prepared and brushed with melted butter-n-chives. Man was it a good dinner!
