    Shakin’ on the Bacon

I was at Doc’s Country Mart in Bixby on Saturday checking out the different varieties of Mrs. Dash and came across these two Bacon Salt products. I recalled seeing the two inventors on a TV show a year or so ago. Then, I thought it was funny and a little silly, but always remembered the interview.

I admit I like bacon but don’t like the mess of cooking it, or the calories and fat of eating it. So, there’s not much bacon that passes through our doors. However, I have a 6′ tall, skinny, 16-year old son that loves bacon, and a bacon-loving hubby too. So, actually seeing this product on the shelf stirred my memory and of course I had to buy it.

I bought the original and hickory flavors. The original is mild and pretty good, but the hickory is down right smokey and tastes more like bacon. We tried it on our eggs and loved it. Warning: a little goes a long way. It would be great on a baked potato, soup, burgers, sour cream dips, popcorn, even salads. The 16-year was later caught eating just the salt…no, stop it, son.

Bacon Salt is $3.39 and is zero calorie, zero fat, low sodium, vegetarian, and kosher.  However, the ingredient list looks more like shampoo than food, but what the heck.

Coincidentally, Bacon Salt is featured in today’s MSN Search Bacon Mania. Click Here to learn more about bacon flavored toothpaste, breath mints, baby formula, and my favorite…bacon flavored dental floss.

    Nothing like Pizza for Breakfast!!

I got a new food processor for Christmas and it’s amazing! One of the features I’m getting to know is the dough setting. I decided to try it out this morning with some breakfast pizzas. After making the pizza dough I rolled out some small six inch circles, sprinkled them with slices of bacon cooked that first for ten minutes. Then came the egg, I suggest using medium eggs for this food adventure the large one got a little messy. Salt, pepper some olive oil and five more minutes of cooking created this awesome breakfast treat!

I’ll Have Bacon on that Popcorn!

I’m not sure why I have not discovered this earlier in life. Such a mix just makes scene in my mind, it seems like a product you should be able to buy off the shelf or from a Boy Scout.

This is the bacon popcorn offered at the NEW Brady Tavern in Downtown, Tulsa

Interesting idea. I’m not a big fan of popcorn except at the movie theater where I can keep telling them to put more and more butter on it and then load it with as much salt as I want, but this is something I could get on board with! But what’s with the cloth napkin it’s presented with? That’s like wearing a tuxedo to eat at Bill’s Jumbo Burger!

Why not have a pork chop with that popcorn? Or a burger?

There is nothing like a delicious deal. This past Friday my girlfriend and I had lunch at Hideaway Pizza for $20 thanks to Tulsa Restaurant Deals The deal was a $9.99 10 inch Cheese Pizza for 2 to Share With 2 Side Salads, $1 Extra Toppings, Monday-Friday 11am-3pm. We ended up spending a few extra bucks getting the Paradise Pie and also got a Coke.

Check out the picture below. Let me just say, “Thank you Hideaway for the nice amount of bacon you added to my pizza. :) ” Also the Alfredo sauce is awesome, provolone cheese, garlic chicken, spinach, Roma tomato , and much more. Oh, so good!

What do you like in a fast food burger? Every once in a while I hit up a fast food joint. A few weeks ago Wendy’s invited us to try their new burger which has Apple Wood Bacon on it (below). Few things… it reminded me of college, when I would order about 5 $.99 bacon cheese burgers at a time, the bacon was better then other fast food places but I think I missed the apple wood part. Lastly, I have to say Wendy’s does make a perrty good fast food burger… what do you think???

Check out the link to a contest Wendy’s is currently holding.

The McGriddle, a Fast Food Masterpiece

Does anyone else out there think that McDonald’s McGriddle is a sick and delicious fast food masterpiece? My personal favorite is the bacon and egg McGriddle and although I only get to enjoy them about 2 -3 times a year I can always close my eyes and vividly imagine the experience in detail. A warm slab of egg with crispy bacon in the middle of two pancake buns injected with syrup.

Are there any other sandwiches in the world injected with syrup?

    Turkey Bacon…Real Bacon?

I don’t think there is any comparison whatsoever! Turkey bacon should be left out of the bacon category all together. Have you tried turkey bacon?? If so vote below and let the world know what you think!

I eat turkey bacon just about every morning. Less then 1/2 the fat and still tastes great with some eggs for a slightly healthier breakfast.

I LOVE TURKEY BACON!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So tasty, and like Brian said…1/2 the fat! You go Brian!

Oscar Meyer Center cut bacon is healthier than turkey bacon and you get all the good bacon flavor .. 2 slices = 60 cal (vs 70 for turkey) 4 fat ( v 5) and 6 protein (v 2)

Being a diabetic turkey bacon has been a god send. but I do have to cheat once in awhile for the real deal. There is no substitute for good fresh greasy “pork” bacon.

I hear Moonsky’s is good from some other reviews. Out of the list I wanna try that one just because Ive never really heard much about in. Is it really inside a Daylight Donuts? If so that’s cool!

Freddie’s Frozen Custard makes an excellent burger, they’re thin, but very juicy, and the fries are excellent as well.

Arnold’s is great too, and walking into Arnold’s is like going back in time! Be sure to get the onion rings!

Debbie, thanks for the tip on the onion rings at Arnold’s. Would have hated to miss that. I’m also looking forward to Freddie’s juicy thin burger.

As I told Brian the other evening I love Harden’s. Both are excellent althought the one of 5th and Sheridan can be a little hit and miss. It was very hit and miss about two years ago. I prefer the location at German Corner in Owasso, 116th and N. Garnett. It’s a drive from mid-town but it’s a solid burger.

Another hidden gem is Shorty’s in Turley. 66th and N. Peoria. Love the fried okra there!

          • Brian 12:19 pm on October 23, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Nice, I’ve never been to Shorty’s. Have you had it Joe? Can’t wait to try that one too! Thanks Mark!

I haven’t heard of Shorty’s in Turley. Sounds like a short road trip could be in my future.

            • Mark 1:27 pm on October 23, 2009 Permalink

I just returned from Harden’s in Owasso. Not happy. Burger was overcooked badly and for third time in a row they added mustard!… it’s lucky they have credit with me for many satisfying burgers in years past…..

I like Harden’s a lot! I am going to have to try them a few more times before I can say whether I like them more or less then Claud’s. I hear that I have to try Webber’s again too….at this point my feelings on them are blaaaaaah!
