September 3rd, 2012 by Brian McCullough – Comments (12)

Acclaimed burger joint Five Guys has moved into Tulsa with its first location NOW OPEN at about 96th and Riverside. The location pictured below is 9635 Riverside Parkway and is open for burgers as of today, September 3rd at 11am.

Five Guys Burger Tulsa

Five Guys is a franchised fast casual burger restaurant out of Virginia with locations all over the US. They’re known for operating at high food quality standards and with a burger loving philosophy that has made them the number one burger in the tummies of their faithful customers.

I had to get a taste of Five Guys myself before they opened in Tulsa. So I stopped by a Kansas City location to give the much worshiped burger a shot. I walked up to the counter and asked them to give me the best. The guy at the register just started rattling off about 10 toppings. I was thinking, no way…I just wanna get me a taste of some of dat meat and not a mouth full of toppings. I quickly realized the uniqueness of Five Guys is the ability to select your own burger toppings from a huge list on the menu. There are actually over 250,000 possible ways to order a burger at Five Guys.

Five Guys Burger

At a place like Five Guys you have to go double. As for my toppings, I went simple with lettuce, tomato, bacon, cheese and mayo. I wanted to experience Five Guys with a classic double cheese burger. Just by looking at the photo of my burger, you can probably guess the burger tasted amazing. The patties where completely cooked (they cook’em how they cook’em) and still very moist with a slight sear around the edges. The cheese was perfectly melted, and the veggies still had a nice crunch.

As I sat at this Five Guys location, I noticed multiple, “best of” Kansas City awards on the walls. It was actually pretty impressive. I could finally see why people are in love with this burger chain. They met all my expectations and gave me insight into their plans for Tulsa. No doubt, they’re going for the best burger title in T-Town.

Is Five Guys the best chain burger? Some from California say that Five Guys will never be better than In-n-out Burger. What do you think?

I visited the New York City branch in 2007 and wrote this. “If AMPAS decided to give an Academy Award for best hamburger, Five Guys has less chance of winning it than I do of winning ten lotteries in a row. The burger was okay, but fell far short of greatness. I might be influenced by the fact that I ordered it rare and was given well-done. But it’s far better than a fast food burger. The two thin patties that composed the burger were hand-shaped and composed of good, steaky meat. Oh, and the fries (which I didn’t eat but which I saw on every table but mine) looked great.”

Still, it was good enough for me to go back a few times.

I have to admit it was a good quality burger, I was in Norman a few weeks ago and stopped at the Five Guys, while I think it was worth about 8.00 for a burger and fry..the $11.76 tab (including a water) was not something I was very impressed on. They give you a “bag” of fry’s..which is enough to feed about 3 people with..but if your looking to splurge a little and want a good greasy hamburger that tastes good this is the place.

5G is a decent burger, and InO is ok too. But they are both FAR from “the best”. Personally, if I want a “chain” burger, they Royal Red Robin (but add onion straws) is the only way I fly.

Looks like they use a cheap Rain-bro Bread sesame buns. And it looks like they were nice enough to give you the heal of the tomato?? I can tell that bacon is extra thin. I’d rather eat at many of our awesome, local Oklahoma burger joints.

There is on in Rogers Arkansas too. Those spicy fries are intense!

The fries look better than most fast food places… but there is no way I’m dropping almost 12 bucks on a burger and fry lunch. There are too many mom-n-pop places in Tulsa that make an awesome burger for a fair price.

The Fat Guy has nothing to fear from these 5 dudes. The bun was the worst part of an average burger. Sweetened, puffy and soggy. No thank you. Brownie’s, Claud’s and Weber’s are all superior as well.

-Just to clarify, from your comments it does not appear they will even consider making a rare burger? If not, i won’t be making the drive.

    Just curious, carry on.

-Confirmed they only cook the burgers well-done. And as thin as they are, they won’t hold up for a to-go order.

    Pass.

I haven’t been to the Tulsa location yet, but last week was out of town and got the chance to try one at the Columbia, SC location. It was by far the best hamburger I’ve ever had. Hands down.

Had them in Vegas and it BLEW away the over-hyped In & Out burgers by a VERY wide margin….

Their fries are fresh and awesome, an order feeds 3. Get the onions cooked in, and you are in burger heaven…I don’t know of a Burger Franchise that will cook rare in this day of Salmonella..

Look forward to trying Tulsa location….PS there is a “Raising Cane” Chicken opening at Woodland Hills food court soon….if it is anything like Vegas, Yowza!!!

-Freddies on Lewis (and presumably all locations), Smoke on Cherry Street, Fat Guy’s downtown, Claud’s…

As for a ‘franchise’, Fuddruckers used to but i haven’t been in years. Smashburger produces a similar patty but doesn’t cook it into hockey-puck heaven. Difference of opinion, but i’ve never had a well-done burger that could every be considered ‘juicy’.
