Tacos And More At Los Unicos!

September 6th, 2012 by Jeremiah Ramey – Comments (9)

Los Unicos isn’t a fancy place. There is no A/C. There is no silverware, plateware, or glass. No reusable napkins. No waiter. Heck, there isn’t really even an inside environment to relax, minus a couple of stools in a breezeway. It’s a structure that holds a kitchen. A friendly cook or two inside that kitchen. That’s about it. Oh, and some really awesome, authentic mexican food. The cook said “What do you want? Everything is good here.” From the looks of the pictures on the wall too, it seemed just that. We ordered and sat outside, somewhat shaded from the 100 degrees, and waited for the man to yell “order up!”

Tacos. We all love them. But not the crappy kind at fast food chains and restaurant chains. Blah! Talkin’ street, yo! Real tacos with choices of meat, onions, lime, fresh cilantro in doubled-up, hand-size tortillas. All that you need. What’s cool is you can order their tacos with a variety of meat choices….chorizo, asada, al pastor, etc. I think there’s 6 or 7 meats to choose. Same as their torta, they offer whatever meat choice you would like on that as well. Same as many of their dishes, actually. I chose to get a couple tacos, one with chorizo and the other with asada. And they were fabulous. In the infamous words of my 5-year-old kiddo, “I could eat 100 of these!”

Also, I ordered the roasted corn. Oh man! Lightly layered with a mayo concoction and topped with parmesan and chili powder. I could have eaten 200 of these. Seriously!

My buddy ordered the special of the day which was 4 enchiladas with rice and beans. Again, the guy said he could put whatever meat he wanted inside the enchiladas. He chose chicken, asada, beans, and cheese. He said they were good and even the beans and rice tasted awesome.

Two tacos, roasted corn, an enchilada platter, and two drinks down, and we walked away from this joint extremely satisfied and with quite a bit of money still left in our wallets. The amount of food and the quality of the food was top notch. The price was very inexpensive. The weather was 100 degrees out, but that food more than made up for it. I will be back for the torta….and maybe the burritos, and quesadillas, and burgers….

I’m a home cook with a little professional dabbling experience. A lover of craft beer! And if you don’t know about craft beer, then you will. Effervescent, vivacious, flavorful, and extremely wonderful. Happiness in a bottle….or can. Craft beer is an amazingly diverse and complex drink. Around one hundred different styles of beer in the world and thousands of breweries. A booming industry right now in America! And still, craft beer is deserving of MUCH greater culinary respect than it has been receiving.

I believe there is a beer for everyone and a beer for every delectable dish out there. I believe it stands up to wine just as well and even better in the culinary world. Cooking, pairing, drinking, and education. I hope to bring some useful knowledge into the foodie world concerning great beer with great food. Not everything is about beer, but it sure does make it better. Cheers!

-If they have lengua and cabeza, i’ll make the trip. Anyone recall their meat choices?

Nice job on the pictures, but i kinda wished you would elaborate on what your meal cost using the actual prices. I know, i know, cheapskate all the way.

I don’t generally like to give out prices, but I will this time. All together it was 15 buckaroos.

You’re not doing the business any favors by not giving out prices. If I have no idea what the meal will cost, I’ll skip it.

So, you don’t venture out anywhere without knowing prices first? Hmmm.

No, I don’t. What’s wrong with being an informed consumer? Why waste time and gas going to a place that will charge more than I’m willing to pay? To paraphrase Ben Franklin, “Watch the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.”

The jalapeño burger there is amazing!! Also, aside from the corn on the cob… Which is my favorite item at L.U. They also offer the same corn, only in a cup. It stays so hot that you can barely eat it. I let mine cool for 10 minutes, and it was STILL screaming hot! I love Los Unicos, and drive miles out of my way to eat their food as often as possible. Oh, and real coke in a glass bottle made with real sugar is the icing on the cake.

I had a pineapple and my buddy had the coke. So surprised to see bottled coke. I almost went for it, but it’s been forever since I had Jarritos.

The hot Dogs are wicked! They have a pureed jalapeno and are delicious.

Great recommendation! Has a taco truck feel to it but solid food. An amazing selection of menu items all things considered.

Enjoyed a torta and ear of corn last weekend and it was as good as advertised.
