I enjoyed my “Cinco” celebration and hope you did too! In honor of the holiday here are a few Cinco de Mayo facts via

  • It commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862.
  • It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population.
  • It is not, as many people think, Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually September 16.

We joined in the festivities downtown about 5:00pm and expected places to be busier than they were. We chose El Guapo’s Cantina as our spot and although the rainy weather might have kept some in, the crowd soon began to grow at an exponential rate. The roof area was open but they also had a large tent in the middle of the blocked road with tables and an outside bar. We chose to eat and hang out inside and received great service despite the mass of diners who filled the restaurant.

I love chips and salsa and I downed two bowls of salsa last night, but it wasn’t my favorite. The cheese enchilada’s where gooey with cheese, topped with onion and served with a side of refried beans and rice…yum! Some friends got a small order of fajita’s which was more than enough for two people to share and included a big plate of toppings to complement the meal. My husband enjoyed a enchilada/taco/tamale combo with rice and refried beans.

The drink specials were $2.00 Tecate and $3.00 Sol so we enjoyed a few ice cold Tecate’s with lime. Most of the staff wore fake mustaches which was pretty humorous and the service was fast and friendly. Good times!
