Spudders: A Disappointment

March 4th, 2009 by Staff – Comments (23)

The Spudder is under new ownership!!! Please read their NEW Review Here! New Times at The Spudder Steakhouse

Please, please save your money and go somewhere else. I had one of the strangest dining experiences of my life at this dwindling place of business.

To start off, the wait staff was exceptional, but weary of making any changes to the menu. They made us aware that they regularly get “in trouble” from management when trying to appease the customers requests. That should have been a red flag for the rest of the evening. They bring out hard little rolls in a lunch box, cute, then “potato soup” that tastes like a mixture of spam and canned potatoes, then you get a nasty little salad with watery dressing. At our table, there was charcoaled lamb chops, [tiny, tiny portions], rare, bleeding steaks that should have been cooked to medium, undercooked baked potatoes and fried shrimp that tasted so strongly of freezer burn, they were inedible. All this at exorbitant prices.

Unfortunately, someone at the table needed to talk to the manager/owner about the inferior food and the total of the bill. The conversation started out convivial enough and immediately turned sour. The “gentleman” in charge became enraged and started yelling, screaming and cursing. Keep in mind there were 4 children all under the age of 9 seated with us. You would not believe the levels this encounter soared to. This man is definitely not all there. There would be no rational conversation. He wanted to intimidate and humiliate. This was so awful. I cannot begin to explain the problems this place or this man seem to be exhibiting. So sad.

This is obviously not a good, family restaurant. Please spend your hard earned money at another great Tulsa eatery.

In the 20 years I’ve lived in Tulsa I’ve never eaten there. Now I’m glad to know I’m not missing anything.

I have to disagree with your harsh review. I have eaten there twice and both times the steaks were excellent. If you have never eaten there I really recommend trying it for yourself if you are in the mood for a classic steakhouse. It definitely has a one-of-a-kind historic Tulsa atmosphere and great service. I will try it again and hope nothing has changed!

That is really sad. I’ve been eating at Spudders for years, and have people from out of town who’ll insist on going there every time they’re in town. Don’t know what went so badly wrong on your trip, but I sincerely hope it was a fluke, and not a lasting change.

I ate there many years ago and have never been back. Overpriced. The food is not very good.

We always took people from out of town to Spudders, and we never had a bad meal. We loved the oil theme and I don’t remember rolls in the lunch box, I thought we had bread, but then my memory fails me. The soup and salad was good, and the steaks cooked perfectly. I haven’t been there in two years so it is sad to see it has gone downhill.
The only bad thing I could have said about it was that is was noisy.

We went to spudders last night the food was great. the wait staff was very nice and made any changes that we requested. The manager came around to our table to check if we needed anything.

I HAVE BEEN TO THIS PLACE MANY TIMES AND THERE FOOD IS ALWAYS PERFECT. THEIR POTATO SOUP IS TO DIE FOR AND THEIR ROLLS WERE GOOD ALSO. I’VE BEEN TO JUST ABOUT EVERY STEAK HOUSE IN TULSA AND THIS IS MY FAVORITE BY FAR. THE ONLY PLACE I HAVEN’T BEEN TO IS MOHAGONY’S.

Been a long, long time since I’ve been to Spudders. Unfortunately, this reviewer’s experience doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Spudders would have to improve greatly to reach “mediocre”. Crappy food, dated “theme” ambiance.

Probably well liked by people too clueless to take their CAPS-LOCK off, though. But if you’re under 60, do yourself a favor and stay away.

    Steven Reply:

    Ben,
A “dated theme”? Are you from Oklahoma? Did you take Oklahoma history in school? Did you flunk that class? The oil business defines Oklahoma, it is at our roots, and is a proud piece of our history, present, and future. Many large oil and oil related businesses exist in Oklahoma today. Let me guess, you would rather go to a restaurant that has big cage full of plastic balls to play in?

And the nerve to call someone clueless for having the caps-lock on? Really?? How about using “” on words that shouldn’t have them? And the phrase “theme ambiance”, is redundant and makes me think, you think you’re smart by using “big” words, but if you really were, you would’ve just picked one of the two and went with it.

As for the food at the Spudder, you CANNOT beat their steaks. The service is almost always great. And the owner, yeah he can come off gruff sometimes, but trust me, as a person who has worked in customer service for 15 years, you can never fully understand how frustrating dealing with stupid people can be until you’ve experienced it. He’s always been friendly to me when I’ve been in, once in a while he seems a little rude, but i think he’s usually joking.
And lastly, Ben, I took your post a little personal because you crassly called someone clueless who did nothing but like a restaurant that happens to be my favorite restaurant. My guess is you define the quality of food based on portion/price ratio. McDonlad’s Dollar Menu will always be available for you, and most of them have that cage of plastic balls i mentioned earlier.
    Have a nice day, Steven

I swear if not for the 15-years customer service bit, I’d swear this that this was my brother Steven. LOL at the “cage of plastic balls”

I have been to Spudders many times and tonight was the first time I was disappointed. The potato soup was really good as usual, but my steak was sub-par for Spudder. It is not the best steak in town, but it is a good steak.

I am sorry to hear that others are having bad experiences at the restaurant. It has been around since I was a child. I remember getting to go once and having to split chicken strips because the cost was high. We drove 2 hours to see this restaurant full of so much history.
As an adult I enjoy it because of the friendly atmosphere. I am not waiting for hours to be seated. I am not hurried along to finish so the next customer can be seated. I love reading about the Oklahoma oil history and have brought my children once just for the lessons the stories on the tables provide.
It is a costly meal so it is a rare treat that we get to go…but as a hard working couple my husband and I love that we are comfortable in our jeans but feel like we are in a 5 star restaurant. It is a casual but romantic environment and we love that we can take our time and enjoy each others company without a lot of noise, being crowded or rushed.
We usually eat at 5 star restaurants when we travel at least one night of our trip. I have to say Spudders ranks up there with the best. The food is superb, service even better. They have always asked us to cut into our steaks before they leave so that if they are not perfect we can send them back. They return to the table often asking if our meal is okay. I am not sure how they could have had such an off night but I would reccomend anyone looking for a quiet five star dining experience to give Spudders a try.

My Fiance’ and I ate at The Spudder Saturday. The steaks were great and the service was very nice. I really liked the food, the potato soup was very good and my Rib-eye steak was very good, in fact it was the most tender steak I think I have ever had. Please go and enjoy yourself, the experience is really different than you would ever have anywhere else.

What a great steak resturant. I live in Houston, Texas. I always eat at The Spudder when I come in town. I am there 12-15 times a year. I wish Houston had an establishment like Spudders. Glad I found them.

I just ate at the Spudder this last Tuesday night for the second time. The place has the best steak I’ve ever had. “Water down dressing” sorry, I didn’t go there for the salad. I love the soup and steak. I work in the oil industry, so I love going in and looking at all the oil history in that building. My boss has been there at least 30+ times and has never had a bad experience.

Save your money and go somewhere else.

Took the family there last week. Was very disappointed. My wife ordered the rib-eye medium rare and it came out medium-well, and was the lousiest $30 rib-eye I’ve seen. No marbling and bland. Very bad steak. Total bill for the four of us was $110.

My husband and I went there about a month ago. It was the weekend before I had my son, and our “last date” pre baby.. It was the WORST restaurant experience ive ever had.. Ive been reading all these posts about “good/nice service” .. Um, WHAT? I swear, our server HAD to have been drunk. I dont want to think people are that stupid. Initially, we got our drinks.. Ordered our app. She put in the wrong one. Then brought us out TWO of the correct one after fourty five minutes. We got two because the first one sat under the warmer for a good thirty. So she brought us that one, and a new one. (We paid for BOTH) My husband ordered his steak rare, It was ok.. Mine i ordered medium. It was more well, because again, It sat under the warmer for who knows how long. She kept refilling my sprite with water.. And Literally asked my husband how many beers he had, because she forgot. Did i mention we got our bread and soup before our app?? Our ticket came out to 110.. We asked for itemized, then saw she had charged for both apps.. Talking to the owner did nothing. All he would do was say “She wont be here next time you come back.” My husband told him we wouldnt be back, and threw the ticket in his face. NEVER returning.

After such a well thought out rant, you are seemingly incompetent or spoiled. Probably both. After working in a kitchen for a few years, i can tell you it is hard to find good help. Cliche as that may be, its true. You simply canNOT knock a restaurant for having a bad waitress. And just to further prove your incompetence, bread and soup happen to be appetizers also. Who cares which appetizer comes out first. As for your husband throwing the ticket in the owner’s face, utterly arrogant.

    Thomas Reply:

Good restaurants seem to find good help. What’s their secret? I guess you could classify soup as an appetizer. Bread is not an appetizer. But I would imagine that Coty was describing the appetizer listed under the “appetizer” portion of the menu. Is that really upsetting to you for some reason. The fact of the matter is, Coty gave his honest review of a restaurant he visited. If you are that upset by his experience, then I would recommend contacting the owner of the restaurant and volunteering your time and effort to rectifying the situation. The other option is to invest some time in yourself so you can figure out why you are so insensitive to other people’s opinions when they differ with your own. Do you think maybe the Spudder restaurant on that given evening was just plain wrong? I will tell you that the difference between great restaurants and those that eventually go out of business, is that the great ones recognize errors and correct them. I’ve never been to a great restaurant where they haven’t fixed a problem immediately. But if you think the Spudder restaurant is a great restaurant then go eat there tonight. No one is stopping you.

It makes me sad to hear that several people have had such a bad experience at Spudders. Fortunately, all of my experiences were pleasant. My food has always been cooked perfectly and the staff has been friendly. The meat portions have always been large. I haven’t had a probelm with the soup or salad. The appetizers are on the small side. The restaurant is expensive; so, it is somewhere I go as a special treat. For this reason I would not recommend it for a large family dinner (the cost would add too quickly). The bread does come out in old metal lunch boxes, but I have not heard anyone complain about them (I cannot eat wheat). If you are planning on eating at Spudders, the food does take some time because it is presented as courses. I think it is worth trying (If not, I recommend Jamils). I can understand a reluctance to frequent an establishment that exhibits such a poor level of professionalism. I will continue to visit the restaurant until my personal experience dictates otherwise.

This has been quite a long discussion. I bought this classic steak house in September of 2011. New management started October 3, 2011. I can not speak pro or con to any experience prior to that. The serving staff here tries to be attuned to the needs of our guests. Our general desire on service speed and order is to give a well paced unhurried meal. If a diner requires a quicker pace, that can always be accomodated. Not only is our bread served in period lunch boxes, our entire theme celebrates Tulsa’s rich oilfield heritage. From the Cable Tool Rig out front to the bib overalls are all part of the daily trappings of a roughneck in the field.
Since buying “The Spudder” many improvements have been made including quality improvements to the soup, salad and steaks.
Please feel free to look at the other websites that review restaurants, paying particular attention to the posts after October 2011. There has been a definate improvement in our lever of service as well as the quality of the offering at the restaurant.

I have two co-workers who have been to Spudder on separate occasions over the last month. One was last Saturday night (2/4). Both have come back saying they won’t be back. They have both said that it is overpriced and lacking quality. Again, this is only the opinion of two different co-workers of mine. I have not been and don’t plan on going. Tulsa has a lot of great restaurants and I typically don’t give restaurants a chance when all I hear are negative reviews. I don’t doubt that the Spudder could be good. Unfortunately, I just haven’t heard that opinion from anyone.
