Speedy Gonzales: Not Too Pretty But Oh So Good

March 24th, 2009 by lbanks – Comments (9)

Having been recommended by a friend, I stopped by Speedy Gonzales Mexican Food for lunch the other day. The restaurant itself is nothing special and it had always been one of those places that I would drive by without really noticing. I arrived at about 11:45 and the place was packed. I didn’t have time to eat there so I ordered two chicken enchiladas with cheese sauce to go. I also got a side of chips and queso to share with some coworkers. Due to the sheer number of orders coming through it took awhile to get my food even though it was to go. I took it back to work, to eat at my desk and I was not too impressed with the presentation. The food had not traveled exceptionally well and didn’t look amazing like I prefer. However one bite into it and I was sold. Who cares about presentation when you make chicken taste that good! The chicken was very flavorful with a subtle kick to it which made it a very outstanding chicken enchilada. One enchilada and a couple of chips filled me up so next time I will get just one. This place is definitely worth giving a try.

Not too pretty because it’s in a to go container, but tasty !

Really?? People like this food? My husband and I LOVE Mexican food, especially the authentic kind you can find over in the east side of Tulsa. We tried Speedy Gonzales once and could not believe how bland and boring their meat dishes were; each one tasted the same. We could not figure out how the place even stayed open. Granted, we did not go back to try the chicken dishes, and maybe we will do that to see if it is as good as some say. I guess some people love the mild/bland Tex-Mex food but we much prefer the authentic regional Mexican restuarants that Tulsa is so lucky to have.

nancys, what are some of your favorites places on the east side?

Is this the same Speedy Gonzales that is/was at 21st and Sheridan, across from Casa Bonita? I used to work in that area and ate there all the time, but I haven’t been by there in quite some time.

Some we have been to in the past were:
Antojitos, Mercados El Ahorro and Tortillera El Milagro. Our favorite, though, is Costa Azul.

Thanks, nancys. I’ve heard so many people mention Costa Azul. I think I’m going to have to try it.

Thanks, admin. I live in BA, and didn’t realize there was a Speedy Gonzales so close.

Having just read one of the reviews for Speedy’s I must agree as I have been an avid customer of Speedy’s for many years. Even when they were still located on Sheridan just south of 21st and now at their new spot at 27th and Memorial. The food remains outstanding as always, the atmosphere is wonderful and the staff always cheerful and helpful.

My family and I have never had a bad meal or bad experience at Speedy’s and whenever someone asks me to suggest a place to get Mexican food I delightful tell them “Speedy’s” is the place to go.

We have tried a number of Mexican restuarants here in the area over the years but remain loyal patrons of Speedy’s as the best place in town to get wonderful delicious Mexican food and atomsphere.

Fist of all, when “Speedys” was on Sheridan…it was GREAT! However, when the moved to Memorial they lost the local feeling. I have been going to Speedy’s for over seven years while on Sheridan and LOVED every time I went there. When they moved to Memorial………………..DOWN HILL ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!! My first experience was I got there at 8:30..ordered my dinner and glass of iced tea. When i went to fill my tea glass from the tea container..there was NO tea. So I went back to the order taker and told her that the tea container was empty……she informed me that it was 30 minutes till closing and they would not make anymore tea. Okay…NOT happy but ate my dinner and had water, tipped and left. Five days later, went back and ordered my dinner, paid for it…………………………………………………………………………AND NO BS……CLOSE TO 45 MINUTES AFTER I ORDERED ..they bring me my food……..WHICH WAS NOT EVEN WHAT I ORDERED. I told the girl that brought my food that the order was wrong..she took my plate from the table spilling rice all over the table. LONG STORY SHORT…….SPEEDY’S SHOULD GO BACK TO LIKE IT WAS ON SHERIDAN…small…BUT GREAT FOOD AND SERVICE.

I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THE SPEEDY’S ON MEMORIAL OR EVERN THINK ABOUT TELLING ANYONE TO GO THERE!!!
