Mexicali Border Café in the Brady District

September 18th, 2009 by lbanks – Comments (2)

While I was out running errands with a friend the other day downtown, we decided to give the Mexicali Border Café a shot. I have driven past the one on the Southside nearly every day, but had yet to try it. So when I saw the other location, in the historic Brady district, I knew that I had to give it a shot. The place was pretty slow for a weekday night but the ambiance of the place had a nice authentic feel. We started with the guacamole, which was very typical but not outstanding in any way. It was a little bland and didn’t have any kind of kick or flavor that would knock it out of the ordinary guacamole category.

The service was a little hit and miss. Our server was fairly attentive at the beginning of the meal however it had dwindled by the end of the meal to the point that we didn’t get refills on our waters and had to flag her down for the check. My burrito was stuffed with beans, cheese and ranchero chicken and topped with white cheese sauce and jalapenos, served with rice and beans on the side. The burrito, like the guacamole, was nothing extraordinary. The flavor was a little on the bland side and the tortilla seemed a little old.

My friend’s enchiladas looked a lot better than my burrito. The two verde enchiladas were filled with shredded pork and pico de gallo, topped with tomatillo sauce, jack cheese and sour cream and avocado. It was flavorful and delicious. The food was okay but in a city overly inundated with Mexican restaurants, the Mexicali Border Café, in the Brady District, will not be my first choice. I will say that I have heard that the location on the Southside is known to have both better food and service. So even though my first experience with the Mexicali Border Café was not amazing I may have to try the Southside location to balance my opinion of it.

Most of the food is going to be americanized these days to fit the tastes of americans. you need to hunt down a taco truck and get some real taste. as far as the tortilla it was probly on the plate too long and got hard. next time you should try a sampler. the waitress was probly on the phone taking another order.
