Comfort yourself at Kari Okie’s

September 4th, 2009 by Debra Laizure – Comments (10)

Do you ever just NEED comfort food? It rained today and I had a hard time getting motivated. In fact, my morning ended up being very busy and the stress was getting to me. The cure? Kari Okie’s in downtown Bixby. OK, OK, I know it seems like a long drive but it’s just a block east of Memorial and a few blocks south of 151st and totally worth the few extra minutes to get there.k-okie-1

Today’s lunch special was meatloaf which is served dry (no way), with brown gravy (thank you) or red tomato sauce like Grandma. My friend had that since I had it just the other night. Of course the side had to be mashed potatoes. And a yeasty, soft, warm cloverleaf roll the size of a mountain. I chose chicken and dumplings. So tasty and soothing it will put you in a coma. So not to fall asleep directly on the table I had a huge jalapeno cornbread muffin and the best “restaurant” tabouli I’ve ever had.k-okie-2

For you native Tulsans, Kari Okie’s boasts the best of Pennington’s Drive-in. Kari’s mom was a car hop there in the 60′s/70′s and scored some recipes. Being a Brookside gal myself I couldn’t believe it but one bite of the black bottom pie shut me up. It really is Pennington’s pie, rolls, and shrimp basket.

The restaurant is also a bakery. From sticky buns, cookies to party cakes, they have scrumptious pastries for every occasion. It’s all on display by the cash register to tempt you too.

The service is especially good and the food comes out piping hot. In the evening, the tables have card decks to keep you busy until the food comes. The atmosphere is very cozy and laid back. Just the perfect place to de-stress.

WOW nothing like good mash potatoes and gravy to make you feel like you are in the comfort of your own home eatin MaMa’s food. That’s what that reminds me of. I am not really too much into meatloaf but when I saw that picture of the meatloaf dinner I changed my mind. Can’t wait for my next visit to try it out. One thing about visiting my kids in Tulsa, there are some amazing places to go out to and eat. Your website really helps me to pick the best ones. Thanks again

The last time I visited this place was awful. First, as our party arrived, the owner complained that “it was going to be a bad night” due to the amount of people wanting to dine there. I told her we would be happy to eat elsewhere, but her mood slightly improved so we began to order. Our food was average, at best, and my chicken fried stead was burnt to a black crisp on the bottom side. Finally, the canned corn tasted a day old, and the extra butter added to it was not enough to cover the bad vegetables. The desserts were good.
