Contemporary Cowboy Cuisine at Go West Restaurant

December 21st, 2010 by Whitney Shae – Comments (20)

“I think I have found my new favorite restaurant in Tulsa,” I satisfyingly proclaimed as we finished up our Jalapeno Cheesecake at the new Go West Restaurant & Saloon near New Sapulpa Road in Tulsa. Everything from the extravagant, contemporary western décor to the strong attention to detail in the silverware, I was strikingly impressed from first look.

Well it wasn’t only the interior that instantly made me feel at home. We were immediately greeted by the owner, Johnny Wimpy, which of course is a cowboy himself & dressed the part head to toe.  The menu is so unique that it had me salivating at first look. “Contemporary Cowboy Cuisine” with many influences of the American West and the Executive Chef himself – Doug Atkinson. Chef Atkinson, a fifth generation Texan, uses his heritage and Western influences to develop and define his signature culinary style at Go West Restaurant & Saloon.

If you had ever made it out to the late Avalon Steakhouse, that is where this newly remodeled, 6200 square foot restaurant can be found. I was shocked how much renovating had been done to this beautiful building. You will be too. Go West Restaurant & Saloon features an exhibition kitchen where diners can enjoy the Culinary production from their table. With sixty seats in the main dining hall, a forty seat private dining room, an additional forty in the saloon and thirty on the patio there is plenty of room to enjoy lunch or dinner as well as any type of private function.

Carefully selected products are chosen for ingredients to the menu such as all-natural Oklahoma Beef, artisan goat cheese, locally sourced produce, Bodean’s Seafood & Market and natural chicken. I love that the culinary team at Go West produces all the breads, tortillas and pastries in-house. Bacon, salad dressings, soups and sauces are all made by hand to provide diners with the highest quality product available at a fair price. The Chefs at Go West will never cut-corners for profit and have instilled that sense of pride and creativity into their culinary team.

Our first course consisted of Chef Atkinson’s Award Winning BBQ Scallops with Green Chile Broth and Jalapeno Cheese Grits.
There were so many to choose from, so we also tried the Fried Green Tomatoes with Fresh thick Mozzarella and Mixed Greens.

I have found my new favorite salad here at Go West. The Go West Caesar Salad tossed with black bean relish, crisp tortilla strips and homemade Cilantro Ranch. I can’t stop thinking about it. It is the best and most unique Caesar salad I have ever tasted.

For our main course, Brian couldn’t pass up the Beef Tenderloin. Atop 4 mushroom enchiladas and drizzled with Salsa Roja & Goat Cheese Crema, this is a dish worth raving about. The meat was very lean, cooked perfectly and was bursting with flavor.

The Oak Roasted Pork Chop was at the top of my list. The chop was so tender and flavorful with a unique touch of apple butter and red wine sauce. One of my favorite parts was the Green Chile Macaroni and cheese that came as my side – fabulous!

This is what they bring by your table at the end of your meal at Go West. Of course we couldn’t resist, so we ordered the Jalapeno Cheesecake and the Chocolate Diablo ancho chile infused cake with peanut butter mousse -two desserts that I will definitely be having again. Jalapeno Cheesecake may sound intimidating, but it is not what you would expect. The first bite leaves a sublet Jalapeno flavor in you mouth that resonates throughout the experience which is  complemented by the fruits and cheesy flavors.

Confession Time. We loved this place so much that we had to come back the next night with our friends. Check out these other wonderful dishes below. It is just the beginning of our restaurant ventures at Go West Restaurant & Saloon. Try it for yourself! Below are some extra pictures from our visits.

This is such a wonderful review. This is the definitive
review. Now I can go there and enjoy it without having the anxiety
    of writing a review.

If I had food snob friends arriving from New York and wanted to show them that excellent haute cuisine and elegant decor can be combined with a uniquely Oklahoma welcome, this would be where I’d take them.

After reading the review, my wife and I met a friend at Go West. She was on her way through Tulsa returning from her holiday trip up north. The review was right on target. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was superb. My wife and our friend had the oak-roasted pork chop with green chile macaroni ($13). I had the wood-fired chicken breast with tomato-cumin and black beans ($12). The salads (Caeser-$5, mixed greens with Cilantro Ranch-$3) were excellent. The owner (Slim) came to our table to insure that everything was to our liking. The saloon looked very inviting, so the next time, we will try out the appetizers and desert menu. This is a treasure of a find and it’s only been open 4 weeks. You owe it to yourselves to check it out.

I have eaten here twice, and echo the positive comments.
The food was outstanding. Very few places have I been greeted by
the owner, with a handshake. However each time I went I probably
would have ordered a salad had i been asked. The server simply
asked what I wanted for dinner, and didn’t ask about a salad. I had
to ask for wine each time too. On one hand it was nice not having
to put up with the frustrating “suggestive sell” routine where the
server annoyingly tries to sell you on every extra item they can.
However a place with food as nice as Go West could be proud enough
to ask about a side salad or wine. I only mention this because the
owner and chefs certainly put a lot into this new restaurant, and
it offers something new and creative to the Tulsa area. We want it
    to succeed!

I had to pay an extra $7 because my server asked my friend
    if she wanted a salad.

We had a party of 6 there the night the Tulsa World article was published (Jan. 4, 2011). It was a delightful meal. The wines, appetizers, salads meals and deserts were all very good.

The staff is a little “green” yet and needs to develop more bravada and confidence but other than that I would highly recommend this place.

Being out in the sticks I am concerned about their longevity but we will go again.

I was shocked thrice. 1st, that people would wait 1 hour to eat there; 2nd, the unusual menu selection and 3rd, the hefty price.

If your idea of Cowboy Cuisine is placing your steak on an enchilada, or dumping your pork chop on macaroni, then this is a place for you. Expect to pay $160 for a family of four.

Leaving aside the quality of the food, which I think is sensational, it would be really hard for 4 people to run up a $160 tab. I was full after eating the $13 pork chop. My bill: $13. Two people could split the $14 chicken. Their bill: $7 each. Satisfaction: Priceless.

Food quality is subjective Mr. Schwartz, I’ll give you that. However, the price is very Objective. Beef Tenderloin atop of Enchilada $24 x 4. (Note: comes with no side dish, where’s the potato or green beans?); 4 green salads, 2 glasses of wine; 2 soft drinks and 4 desserts, equals $160. I did tip so the total was over $170 without breaking a sweat. Usually tip 20% but couldn’t bring myself to do it. I wish them well and only trying to give objective criticism.

The side dish in the case of the tenderloin is the two enchiladas. Two of us ate there, each had wine, and the total bill was about $50. I’ve paid more for lower quality meals in Tulsa. GW is right off the highway…people who grouse that it’s ‘far out’ will find it probably takes them less actual driving time to get there than many placed they have to use city streets to get to.

    Billy Bob Reply:

No offense Mr. Burdiss, but it sounds like you ordered the most expensive items on the menu, had salad and dessert and alchohol and complain about $40 per person. Sounds like a very reasonable price to me for such a nice restaurant. And your server did not choose the pricey menu items and should not have been penalized if they provided good service. I am curious how your party liked their meals?

    KW Reply:

I am not one to normally reply to such but as someone who has worked in fine dining while working a full time job it never ceases to amaze me people who feel it okay to tip poorly their server when they are overwhelmed by the bill they have racked up. Given most servers make $2.13/hr and then tip out bartender 10%, bussboys, hostesses, pay credit card fees etc and then get to take home whatever is left. Please do us a favor and just go eat at one of the all you can eat buffets where you will be more satisfied by the quantity of food not the quality of food and experience.

If you want great tasting food and reasonable prices, then you have found your restaurant. With its unique uses of the jalapeno pepper such as in their divine cheesecake and their many wonderful uses of chili peppers, in the immaculate chocolate cake. If you’re in the mood for steak on top of an enchilada and chicken fried steak on top of macaroni and cheese I would defiantly recommend this to anyone into haughty food. This is a definite once in a lifetime opportunity for great steaks, service, and magnificent prices all for around $60 for my family of 4.

We were very suprised how unique the menu was. But we enjoyed it very much and the hospitality is excellent. The owner must have come by 5 times while we were there and the place was so packed we ate in the bar. Hubby is making reservations as I type this, we are on our way back to try out something different than the 1st visit. Maybe the Chicken Fry!
